Garrett Wilson’s ‘game-changing’ TD puts Jets ahead for good against Texans in skid-snapping victory

Date:

Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson caught nine passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns, the second of which came on a highlight-reel grab that put New York ahead for good in Thursday’s 21-13 win over the Houston Texans.

Wilson’s 26-yard score, a one-handed snag in which he got his body down and reversed the initial call on the field of an incomplete pass, went the extra mile as the Jets (3-6) snapped a five-game skid with a comeback victory against AFC South-leading Houston (6-3).

“With the shin, I thought it was close enough to definitely challenge,” said interim coach Jeff Ulbrich. “Thankfully, they got it right.”

The third-and-19 grab at the fourth quarter’s 12:54 mark was reminiscent of former Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.‘s Nov. 23, 2014, when he reached back and plucked with his fingertips a 43-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Eli Manning.

“Being in the same building (MetLife Stadium), it was similar,” said Jets wide receiver Davante Adams, who complemented Wilson with seven receptions for 91 yards and one touchdown. “But I like it more because it was for the Jets.”

Wilson initially put the Jets on the board with a one-handed catch and run for a 21-yard touchdown on second-and-12 with 9:03 left in the third quarter to tie the game at 7-7.

“He made an unbelievable catch,” said quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who completed 22 of 32 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns. “When I saw the replay, it looked like he had his knee in. … Game-changing play.”

Riding Wilson’s momentum, the Jets look to keep making plays next Sunday at 4:25 p.m. when New York goes on the road for Week 10 and faces the Cardinals in Arizona.

“It was a huge win,” Wilson said. “If we want to do what we want to do, it had to start with one and this is that one. So it’s not as big as the next one, because it’s behind us now, but it’s a big win to get us rolling, get us started.”
