Girls tennis roundup: Fergus Falls Otters oust host Willmar Cardinals, 7-0

Sep. 23—WILLMAR — The Willmar girls tennis team remains winless in the Central Lakes Conference after getting swept by Fergus Falls on Monday.

The Otters are second in the CLC with an 8-2 conference record following the 7-0 victory at Willmar High School. The Cardinals are 0-6 in the CLC.

Two singles matches needed three sets to determine a winner. Fergus Falls’ Layla Zosel played a marathon third set with Willmar’s Aubrey Peterson, with Zosel securing the 2-6, 6-2, 12-10 victory at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, the Otters’ Ashtyn Lill overcame a first-set loss to beat Emily Floren, 2-6, 6-1, 10-6.

Willmar is back at home for a CLC dual against Detroit Lakes at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

All four singles players were winners in Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg’s win against Redwood Valley at Redwood Falls.

Elle Kletscher, Ava Oakes, Tara Beyer and Emily McGinty each won in straight sets at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 singles for Benson/KMS.

Benson/KMS’ pairings of Avery Davis and Ella Lysen and Keala Carroll and Hazel Habben were victorious. Davis and Lysen are the No. 2 doubles team and Carroll and Haben are No. 3.

Benson/KMS hosts Sauk Centre at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Benson.

Morris/Chokio-Alberta/West Central Area got a sweep of doubles victories to beat Yellow Medicine East at Morris.

Brianna Nelson won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles against MACA/WCA’s Nora Meek. Sarana West earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles against MACA/WCA’s Ruby Lhotka. Abigail Jimenez won 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles against MACA/WCA’s Lilia Asmus.

YME hosts Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Granite Falls.

Isla Dille and the doubles team of Emma Knudsen and Molly Patten earned wins in the Dragons’ loss to Foley at Litchfield.

Dille, the No. 1 singles player for Litchfield, won 6-0, 6-0 against the Falcons’ Olivia Sauer.

Knudsen and Patten, the No. 1 doubles team for the Dragons, earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Foley’s Anna Dahlstrom and Chloe Bechtold.

Litchfield next competes in the Wright County Conference tournament at 10 a.m. Thursday at Glencoe.
