Girls tennis roundup: Litchfield Dragons’ singles set the tone against NLS Wildcats

Sep. 12—LITCHFIELD — The No. 4 Litchfield girls tennis team has continued its strong week.

The Dragons beat New London-Spicer 6-1 on Thursday afternoon.

Litchfield swept the singles matches. Isla Dille, Maya Wuotila, Emma Wuotila and Marcella Bruning all were victorious at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 singles.

NLS’ point came from its No. 2 doubles pairing of Heidi Taunton and Averie Turner. Taunton and Turner defeated the Dragons’ Brynn Nagel and Tayah Damerow in straight sets (6-4, 7-5).

The Dragons play host to Annandale at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Litchfield. NLS goes to Willmar at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The St. Cloud Crush swept Willmar to improve to 6-0 in the Central Lakes Conference and 11-1 overall at St. Cloud Tech High School.

One of the seven matches went into a third set. St. Cloud’s Bella Newbauer beat the Cardinals’ Emily Floren 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 at No. 3 singles.

Willmar (0-5 CLC, 0-10 overall) next competes in the Big Lake quadrangular on Saturday. The Cardinals will face Big Lake, North Branch and Roseau.

The Minnewaska Lakers, who are ranked No. 3 in Class A, made quick work of the Melrose Dutchmen at Glenwood.

Alia Randt, Olivia Danielson, Kaylen Blair and Megan Thorfinnson picked up singles wins at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 for Minnewaska. Avarie Uhde and Rachel Rankin, Katy Vold and Addy Heid, and McKenna Uhde and Katie Sorenson earned victories for the Lakers.

Minnewaska next competes in a triangular against Alexandria and Wadena-Deer Creek at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Glenwood.

Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd swept the singles matches before defeating the Wolverines at Clara City.

Hannah Oie, Kayla Jahn, Elsie Wiebe and Alexis Olesen each won for LQPV/D-B.

Ava Janssen and Lilyanne Pauling, MACCRAY’s No. 2 doubles pairing, won 6-2, 6-3.

LQPV/D-B next goes to Glenwood to play Minnewaska at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. MACCRAY next plays host to Marshall at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Clara City.

Yellow Medicine East’s singles players all won their matches in straight sets to help the Sting to a victory at Sauk Centre.

Brianna Nelson, Emma Keller, Sarana West and Abigail Jimenez picked up the wins at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 singles.

YME’s No. 2 doubles team of Carley Redepenning and Kyla Smith won 6-1, 6-1 over Sauk Centre’s Keely Klein and Emily Wojtanowitz.

YME plays host to Marshall at 4 p.m. Friday at Granite Falls.
