Girls tennis roundup: Minnewaska Lakers hang on for top-5 win

Sep. 9—OSAKIS — In a clash between two of the top teams in Class A, the Minnewaska girls tennis team got the best of Osakis.

The Lakers, ranked No. 3 in the Minnesota Tennis Coaches Association Polls on Sept. 8, beat No. 2 Osakis behind a 4-3 victory on Monday.

Minnewaska swept the doubles matches and got one singles victory to secure the win.

Avarie Uhde and Rachel Rankin won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles against the Silverstreaks’ Jaclyn Dietrich and Maddi Bouldin. Katy Vold and Addy Heid won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles against Osakis’ Morgan Baker and Mataya Moore. Katie Sorenson and McKenna Uhde won 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles against the Silverstreaks’ Payton Drum and Mackenzie Steele.

Olivia Danielson picked up the sole victory for the Lakers’ singles players. She beat Osakis’ Ava Drevlow in straight sets (6-4, 6-0) at No. 3 singles.

Minnewaska hosts Melrose at 4:30 p.m. Thursday back at Glenwood.

All seven of Montevideo’s points in its sweep came from straight-set victories against Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at Belgrade.

Brooke Lindeman at No. 1 singles, Ashley Klaassen at No. 2 singles and Carlee Axford at No. 4 singles all won 6-0, 6-0 for the Thunder Hawks.

BBE’s Ellan Fischer and Grace Berndt won six games across their two-set No. 1 doubles match against Montevideo’s Gwyn Smiens and Lily Eisenlohr. Smiens and Eisenlohr won 6-3, 6-3.

Montevideo hosts a triangular Tuesday, playing Sauk Centre at 3 p.m. and Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd at 4:30 p.m. BBE is back at home against St. John’s Prep at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Belgrade.

Litchfield earned victories in all three of the doubles matches en route to a victory against Mound-Westonka at Mound.

Isla Dile, Emma Wuotila and Marcella Bruning won at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 for the Dragons. Emma Knudsen and Molly Patten at No. 1 doubles, Brynn Nagel and Tayah Damerow at No. 2 doubles and Elly Woelfel and Emily Michels at No. 3 doubles won for Litchfield.

The Dragons, who are ranked No. 4 in Class A by the Minnesota Tennis Coaches Association, host Osakis at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday back at Litchfield.
