Girls tennis roundup: NLS Wildcats get past Willmar Cardinals

Sep. 16—WILLMAR — The New London-Spicer girls tennis team edged Willmar on Monday evening.

NLS, which swept the doubles matches, beat the Cardinals 4-3 in the non-conference match.

The Wildcats’ senior Jadyn Proehl and junior Addi Nelson secured a tiebreak win. The duo won 6-7, 7-5, 10-8 at No. 1 doubles over Willmar freshmen Grace Kalkbrenner and Norah Nesges.

Also securing doubles wins for NLS were juniors Heidi Taunton and Averie Turner, who earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles against the Cardinals’ sophomore Melanie Rhoda and freshman Annika Dahl. The Wildcats’ junior Olivia Paffrath and sophomore Erin Pederson won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles against Willmar senior Abby VanDerBill and sophomore Leiah Arends.

The lone singles win for NLS came from Maddi Prentice. The junior won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles against Willmar sophomore Juliette Haugen.

The Cardinals’ Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles players earned wins. Junior Kennedy Mara won 7-6, 7-6 over NLS senior Amyra Gamez. Junior Aubrey Peterson beat the Wildcats’ sophomore Brooke Glauvitz in a tiebreak, winning 4-6, 6-3, 13-11. Sophomore Emily Floren won 6-3, 6-1 against NLS junior Leia Farhat.

The Wildcats next go to Annandale at 4 p.m. Thursday. Willmar next goes to Brainerd at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Minnewaska got wins from a pair of its singles players and two more from its doubles team to defeat Montevideo at Glenwood.

Alia Randt and Olivia Danielson earned wins at Nos. 1 and 3 singles. Avarie Uhde and Rachel Rankin and Katy Vold and Addy Heid secured victories at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles.

For Montevideo, Ashley Klaassen and Carlee Axford won at Nos. 2 and 4 singles. Kylie Johnson and Teagan Epema, at No. 3 doubles, also won for the Thunder Hawks.

Minnewaska next plays host to Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Glenwood. Montevideo next travels to play Morris/Chokio-Alberta/West Central Area at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Morris.

Fourth-ranked (Class A) Litchfield won a pair of doubles matches in three sets for a road win over Hutchinson.

The Dragons’ No. 1 duo of Emma Knudsen and Molly Patten beat the Tigers’ Tia Mach and Macy Salmela, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6. Then at No. 3 doubles, Litchfield’s Elly Woeffel and Emily Michels held off Brooke Hauan and Claire Bock for a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win.

Isla Dille, Maya Wuotila, Emma Wuotila and Marcella Bruning helped the Dragons sweep singles play.

LItchfield hosts Annandale at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The Marshall Tigers swept the MACCRAY Wolverines in a non-conference road match at Clara City.

MACCRAY next plays Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Benson.
