TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Thanksgiving is almost here and for many East Texans having a turkey on the table is a must, especially if it’s a Greenberg Smoked Turkey.
“We’ll sell about 110,000 to 115,000 turkeys for Thanksgiving alone,” Greenberg Smoked Turkey INC owner Sam Greenberg said.
Looking for a Thanksgiving meal? Here’s where to find food distributions in East Texas
For 85 years Greenberg has operated in Tyler. Every holiday season they see thousands of people trying to get their hands on one of the delicious turkeys.
“It’s the seasoning, it’s the people I have working for me, and the greatest customers in the world. Put those three together and we’ve got a great product,” Greenberg said.
Although grocery store prices are slightly lower, customers are being mindful with their money as this year’s Thanksgiving meal is still expected to be one of the most expensive.
“Definitely been a little bit on the more expensive side for sure. But again, it’s not going to die out the spirit of the holidays here,” Anthony DeFilippo, an East Texas shopper said.
According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, customers will be paying 5% less for Thanksgiving dinner but compared to 2019 they are still paying 19% more, but Greenberg said the cost of turkey has decreased.
“Ours is down about 5%, which everybody is looking for as much help as they can get at the holiday time,” Greenberg said. “I think it has to do with stable feed prices which brought the cost of things down, so we are just able to pass that on.”

Greenberg said he doesn’t expect large price increases anytime soon and believes it will help with the cost of other meats.
“I think that would carry over to other protein, beef, pork and other poultry items,” Greenberg said.
If you people are still worried about how they can afford a turkey, Greenberg said they are giving away free turkeys at events like the Carter BloodCare’s Tyler blood drive.
“Give a pint, get a bird, and we’re really excited about that, help the community,” Greenberg said.
The last day people can get their hands on a Greenberg turkey for Thanksgiving Day is 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Greenberg representatives said Christmas orders are already underway.
