Greenland’s Arctic paradise welcomes a tourism surge as Nuuk opens its first international airport this summer, offering direct flights and unforgettable adventures.

Greenland is poised to revolutionize travel to the Arctic with the opening of its first international airport in Nuuk. Featuring a 2,200-meter (7,217-foot) runway, the state-of-the-art facility will enable direct seasonal flights from Newark, New Jersey, starting in June 2024. This strategic connection will cut travel time to just over four hours, providing a seamless gateway to Greenland’s breathtaking landscapes.

Air Greenland will utilize the Nuuk airport as a central hub, operating larger aircraft to establish direct links with Copenhagen, Denmark, and Reykjavik, Iceland. This major development is expected to significantly boost Greenland’s tourism, which currently sees around 130,000 annual visitors, predominantly through cruises or smaller airports. The improved access will cater to rising global interest while supporting sustainable tourism practices that respect the local environment and culture. Officials estimate that each flight could contribute $200,000 to the local economy.

The Nuuk International Airport project is part of Greenland’s ambitious initiative to enhance its connectivity. By 2026, two additional airports are slated to open in Qaqortoq and Ilulissat, further strengthening both air and sea travel across the country, where paved roads remain a rarity.

According to Anne Nivíka Grødem, CEO of Visit Greenland, the launch of Nuuk’s international airport is a milestone moment for Greenland. “This marks a new era, offering visitors not just a destination, but an authentic Arctic experience defined by its pristine nature and vibrant culture,” she shared.

This groundbreaking development positions Greenland as an accessible yet unspoiled Arctic destination, ready to welcome travelers seeking adventure and serenity in equal measure.
