Gustavsson Becomes First Netminder Since Penguins Jarry To Score Goalie Goal

Date:

On Tuesday night, Minnesota Wild goalie Filip Gustavsson became the latest NHL goalie to score a goal by shooting the puck the length of the ice.

The Swedish netminder, who shares the crease with former Pittsburgh Penguins netminder Marc-Andre Fleury, became the first netminder since Tristan Jarry achieved the feat on Nov. 30, 2023, against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Gustavsson’s goal makes him the 15th goalie in NHL history to be credited with a goal, but only the 10th to shoot the puck into the empty net. He joins the list of several former Vezina Trophy winners, like Martin Brodeur, Ron Hextall, Jose Theodore, and Linus Ullmark.

Historically, the first goalie goal was by Billy Smith of the New York Islanders on Nov. 28, 1979, when Rob Ramage scored on his own net. Meanwhile, Hextall became the first netminder to fire a puck the length of the ice, achieving the milestone goal on Dec. 8, 1987.

The St. Louis Blues became the latest team to surrender a goalie goal, joining several Original Six franchises, including the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, and Montreal Canadiens.

Last season, two Penguins goalies scored a goal, with Alex Nedeljkovic collecting his third career AHL goal with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins about a week and a half before Jarry achieved his goal in the NHL.
