Here’s how South Point girls golf brought home the program’s first NCHSAA state title

South Point High must soon make room for the school’s latest addition to its trophy case.

The Lady Raiders’ girls golf team claimed the NCHSAA 3A state championship Tuesday at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines. It is the school’s first state title in the sport.

South Point’s team total of 510 was one shot better than second-place Lake Norman Charter. After shooting a collective total of 260 in opening round play, the Lady Raiders made up a four-shot deficit Tuesday on the Knights.

Leading South Point on the comeback trail was junior Madison Pruden, who shot a 9-over 81 in Round 2. A two-day total of 158 earned her a fifth-place overall finish.

Nipping at Pruden’s heels was her teammate Sophia Travenski, who shot a 10-over 82 on Tuesday. Her two-day total of 171 earned the junior a top-15 result at the 3A state tournament.

Carli Anne Phillips (94-87 — 181),  Chloe Villareal (96-95 — 191) and Samantha Clements (107-92 — 199) also contributed in helping South Point claim state gold.

Stuart Cramer placed fifth as a team at this week’s NCHSAA 3A state tournament. Freshman Mackenzie Blackledge (87-85 — 172) was her team’s highest finisher, placing 17th. Teammates Winsley Crotts (87-89 — 176) finished 23rd and Audrey Leazer (88-91 — 179) wound up 29th.

Forestview’s Samantha Muñoz finished 77th (104-103 — 207).

Class 1A/2A

West Lincoln placed fifth at the NCHSAA 1A/2A state golf tournament at Sapona Golf Club in Lexington, shooting a two-day total of 558.

Melony Hoffman led the way, shooting a 37-over 179 for the tournament. Gracie Campbell (191), Jaylee Smith (192), Taylor Turner (194) and Aynsley Howard (201) also contributed to the effort.

Lincoln Charter’s Kaylyn Cherry finished 29th (97-90 — 187), with teammate Kaeden Becker winding up 53rd (103-98 — 201).
