Analysis
With the omission of pitchers such as Marcus Stroman and Mark Leiter Jr., manager Aaron Boone has clearly opted for speed over pitching depth against Kansas City.
Stroman did not have a great season and really faltered in the second half of the year following a tremendous first half, something of a trend for the right-hander lately.
Across 30 games (29 starts) the 33-year-old, who signed a two-year, $37 million deal with New York in the offseason, went 10-9 and pitched to a 4.31 ERA in 154.2 innings.
Also not on the roster is Anthony Rizzo, which doesn’t come as a surprise after he fractured two fingers from a hit-by-pitch and revealed he wouldn’t be available on Friday.
Out since Sept. 20 with a right pec strain, Cousins was activated from the 15-day IL on Saturday and made the postseason roster.
