High school golf: Which Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana golfers advanced in the postseason?

Golf postseason has arrived in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana and the opening rounds have already been completed. Local high school golfers are now preparing for districts in Ohio, regionals in Indiana and the first round of the state tournament in Kentucky.

Ohio high school golf

Boys

Division I

Cincinnati boys golfers in Division I completed their sectional rounds at Miami Whitewater on Sept. 18 and at Glenview on Sept. 25.

At Miami Whitewater, St. Xavier finished as sectional champion after shooting a 297. Runner-up Elder shot a 315 while La Salle and Colerain also qualified to move on to the districts.

St. Xavier senior Michael Stagnaro was sectional champion with a 71, finishing two strokes ahead of Colerain’s Alex Diesel and Elder’s Cayse Morgan. Badin’s Matthew Lees and Fairfield’s Brady Compton tied for eighth place with rounds of 78, advancing to districts as individual qualifiers. Walnut Hills’ Ritvik Madan also advanced with an 81 and Talawanda’s Micah Daniels won a playoff against Harrison’s Chase Strine for the final individual spot.

The Glenview sectional proved much closer with just four strokes separating champion Moeller and fifth place Mason.

Moeller won the tournament with a 291 and was followed behind by Loveland and Lakota West’s 293 rounds. Anderson shot a 294 to take the final team qualifier by one stroke over Mason.

Lakota East sophomore Brody Hayes was medalist with a 65 and Mason’s Thomas Niere was runner-up with a 68, both qualifying for districts as individuals. Milford’s Jonathan Campbell shot a 71 to qualify and Little Miami’s Austin Nicholas won a three-way playoff for the final district spot.

What’s next?: Those who qualified will compete at districts at PipeStone Golf Club on Oct. 7. From there, top placers go to the Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15 at NCR Country Club in Kettering.

Division II

Just like in Division I, the top four teams and individuals at the Division II sectional at The Mill Course on Sept. 25 qualified for districts.

Wyoming again took first with a 298 while Mariemont finished in second with a 306. Roger Bacon’s 309 and CHCA’s 318 were also good for district qualification.

Wyoming senior Jack Webb was individual medalist with a 67, finishing three strokes ahead of teammate and last year’s Division II state champion Finley Bartlett and Mariemont’s Will Stevens.

Taylor senior Caleb Bessler finished in fourth and was the first individual qualifier by shooting a 71. Indian Hill’s Jacob Lewis and the Madeira duo of Keegan World and Leo Vahue tied for 11th overall with 79s, allowing all three to take the final district spots.

What’s next?: Division II districts will be at PipeStone on Oct. 1 where the top three teams and individuals will qualify for state. The OHSAA Division II boys state tournament will be at Akron Firestone Country Club on Oct. 13 and Oct. 14.

Division III

Seven Hills cruised to the sectional championship at Browns Run on Sept. 23, shooting a 320 to finish ahead of runner-up Summit Country Day by 32 strokes. Cincinnati Country Day had a 357 and Dayton Christian a 363 to round out the top four qualifiers.

Seven Hills sophomore Matia Kastner was the medalist at Browns Run with a 75, beating out Cincinnati Country Day’s Ethan Argus by a shot. Karson LaGrange of Williamsburg was the first individual qualifier after shooting a 79. He was followed by Middletown Christian’s Spencer Thompson (83), Miami Valley School’s Sid Pallerla (84) and Miami Valley Christian’s Garrett French (86).

What’s next?: Division III golfers will compete at PipeStone on Sept. 30 for districts where the top two teams and individuals will head to state. The Division III boys state tournament runs on Oct. 11 and Oct. 12 at NorthStar Golf Club.

Girls

Division I

The first of two Greater Cincinnati sectionals was on Sept. 23 at Hamilton Elks, followed by the second at Walden Ponds the following day.

At Hamilton Elks, Springboro paced the group, winning the tournament with a 333. Lakota West followed with a 352 while Ursuline Academy with a 359 and Lakota East with a 361 also moved on to districts.

Lakota West’s Paige Treherne was medalist with a 75 and teammate Yebin Yun was just a stoke behind in second place. Little Miami’s Jenna Lynch finished in third and qualified for districts with a 78 and Lebanon’s Olivia Donovan also qualified and finished in fourth overall with an 80. Mount Notre Dame’s Campbell Drum shot an 84 and Turpin’s Taree Martin an 88 to also advance to districts.

At Walden Ponds, Anderson claimed the sectional title with a 303, followed by Sycamore’s 310, St. Ursula’s 346 and Kings’ 356. Mason also shot a 356, but Kings secured the final team qualifying spot at districts with the tiebreaker.

For individuals, Oak Hills junior Adrianna Combs was the sectional medalist and qualified for districts after shooting a 71. Badin sophomore Taylor Zoz shot a 76 to qualify while Mason’s Ava Dattilo (77) and Tanya Zhang (85) also advanced.

What’s next?: The girls Division I district goes off on Oct. 8 at PipeStone. The top three teams and individuals from there will head to the OHSAA tournament on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15 at NCR Country Club in Kettering.

Division II

At Reeves on Sept. 24, Fenwick again claimed the sectional title with a 317 as Madiera followed with a 329, Mariemont with a 349 and Clinton-Massie with a 352.

Madeira freshman Ellie Hartung finished in first overall with a 72, three strokes ahead of teammate and runner-up placer Anica Rane. Sophia Fink of CHCA shot a 76 to finish third, advancing to district as an individual. Following Fink to districts as individuals were Middletown Christian’s Karsyn Meier (84), Seven Hills; Lucie Pease (86) and CHCA’s Elizabeth Marohn (90).

What’s next?: The Division II girls compete at districts on Oct. 2 at PipeStone. The top two teams and individuals go to state on Oct. 13-Oct. 14 at FireStone.

Kentucky high school golf

Boys

In Kentucky, locals from Region 7 and Region 8 advanced to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s state tournament.

In Region 7, St. Henry finished as region champ with a 299 and advanced as did runner-up Ryle with a 314. Ben Carter from St. Henry was the individual champion with a 72. Individual state qualifiers included Covington Catholic’s Joseph Mangine and Sammy Klaene, Walton-Verona’s Jacob Cottrell and Gavin Vonhandorf, Conner’s Max Brunkel and Drake Brittingham, Boone County’s Trenton Wilson, Scott’s Chase O’Keefe and Dixie Heights’ Kyle Flynn.

In Region 8, Highlands finished as team champ with a 294 as seniors Hank Shick and Nate Surrey both shot a 69. Shick won the playoff hole, finishing as regional champ for the third time. Bishop Brossart finished as team runner-up with a combined 304. Individual state qualifiers included Grant County’s Ben Bosse and Brennen Gordon and Campbell County’s Talen Beane.

What’s next?: Region 7 and 8 qualifiers will compete on Sept. 30 at Shelbyville Country Club in the KHSAA state first round. Top placers will then compete at the KHSAA state final round at Bowling Green Country Club from Oct. 7-Oct. 9.

Girls

The KHSAA Region 7 girls tournament had a bit of a shakeup at the top. Ryle finished as team champion after shooting a 325, ending Cooper’s run of four-consecutive titles. Notre Dame’s 361 was good for second place.

One Cooper run did continue though as Reagan Ramage shot a 64, winning by eight strokes for her fifth-consecutive Region 7 championship. Joining Ramage at state as individuals will be Dixie Heights’ Tatjana Andracenko and Addyson St. John, St. Henry’s Carly Apgar and Alexis Fassbender, Walton-Verona’s Addison Vonhandorf and Ava Klipps, Conner’s Sofia Seals and Beechwood’s Ellie Stamm.

From Region 8, individual qualifiers were Bishop Brossart’s Emma Laker, Pendleton County’s Taylor Bruener, Grant County’s Sarah Smith and Braelynn Burgan, Highlands’ Jenna Richey and Campbell County’s Ella Pompilio and Natalie Waggoner.

What’s next?: Region 7 and 8 qualifiers will compete on Oct. 2 at Shelbyville Country Club in the KHSAA state first round. Top placers will then compete at the KHSAA state final round at Bowling Green Country Club from Oct. 10-Oct. 12.

Indiana high school golf

Girls

East Central’s Rowan Pies finished tied for first in regionals last season (falling in a playoff for medalist) before tying for 14th at state. Now a junior, Pies began her 2024 postseason by shooting a 69 at the Greensburg sectional on Sept. 21, finishing as medalist by two strokes.

East Central also finished as team runner-up with a total score of 357, finishing 44 strokes behind champion Batesville and 42 strokes ahead of Greensburg in third.

What’s next?: Pies and East Central will next compete in the regional tournament on Sept. 28 in the Franklin Community regional at The Legends Golf Club. From there, the top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the state finals on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 at Prairie View Golf Club.
