Holland Christian tennis claims state title with six flight champs

The Holland Christian boys tennis team dominated all season and concluded its stellar season in the same dominating form – with a state championship.

The Maroons scored 33 points to win the Division 4 state championship on Monday and Tuesday at the Midland Tennis Center, claiming six of the eight flight championships.

Holland Christian won the tournament by 10 points as Glen Lake scored 23 and Grosse Point Woods University Liggett scored 21. Allegan was seventh with 11.

Dylan Becksvoort claimed the state championship at No. 2 singles. He defeated Glen Lake’s Hawthorn Sutherland 6-3, 7-5 in the finals to claim the title.

Nico Grosso also claimed a state title with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Lansing Catholic’s Hayden Riley in the finals at No. 4 singles.

The Maroons swept all four doubles state championships.

At No. 1 doubles, Henry Langejans and Lucas VanWieren defeated Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett 6-3, 6-0 in the finals to earn the title.

Tyler Hemmeke and Gavin Swiftney reached the finals and defeated Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett 6-3, 7-6 for the crown.

At No. 3 doubles, Michael Gorno and Graham Tanis won the flight championship, defeating Traverse City St. Francis 6-1, 6-3 in the finals.

Levi King and Jack DeYoung completed the doubles sweep for the Maroons with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett in the finals.

At No. 3 singles, Evan Disselkoen reached the semifinals before losing in a 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 match to Berrien Springs’ Edwin Seo.

At No. 1 singles, Josh Dawson had a bye, then lost 6-3, 6-3 to Glen Lake’s Colebrook Sutherland in the second round.
