Homeless encampment erupts in flames under 170 Freeway in Los Angeles

Date:

The northbound 170 Freeway was closed in Los Angeles’ Sun Valley area after a fire broke out at a homeless encampment located under an overpass early Tuesday.

The fire was reported shortly after 1:30 a.m. under the Sheldon Street overpass.

Video showed firefighters dousing chairs, tables and other items that were burning near an area of dry brush.

The fire was knocked down in about thirty minutes allowing for Caltrans crews to inspect the overpass for damage.

A California Highway Patrol spokesperson said there was no significant damage and the incident was cleared shortly before 4 a.m.

The fire raises concerns about the possibility of a large brush fire erupting and quickly spreading as gusty winds hit Southern California Tuesday.

Wind advisories are in place for parts of Southern California, including the San Fernando Valley, until at least noon.

Sustained winds between 15 and 20 mph with gusts to 45 mph are expected, according to the National Weather Service.
