Inigo Martinez has started the season on a high note, proving his worth in the heart of Barcelona’s defence.
The veteran centre-back has made the most of the absence of key players like Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen, stepping up when the team needed him the most.
Four games into the season, he has started every match, playing every minute, and has gained the full trust of manager Hansi Flick.
The defender’s journey to becoming a regular starter this season wasn’t without its challenges. During the pre-season, there were rumours of his departure, as his name appeared on various transfer lists due to Barcelona’s ongoing ‘fair play’ financial struggles.
These issues initially prevented his registration in La Liga, creating uncertainty about his future at the club. However, Flick saw potential in Martinez and insisted he be registered, recognising his importance to the squad, especially with Araujo out for the long term.
A constant for Flick
Martinez made his first start of the season against Valencia, partnering with Pau Cubarsi in the centre of defence. Since then, he has not only cemented his place but has also emerged as the leader of Barcelona’s backline.
His performances have showcased why the team took a chance on him two seasons ago. Martinez has displayed his strengths on the field: his aggressive defending, smart positioning, and calmness in playing the ball out from the back.
Being the only left-footed centre-back in the squad has also made him a valuable asset in Flick’s tactical setup.
Beyond his on-field abilities, Martinez brings other qualities that have impressed Flick. At 33, he is a model professional in training, always giving his best effort, which aligns perfectly with Flick’s expectations.
Martinez is a mentor too
His experience has been invaluable to the younger players, particularly to Cubarsi. Martinez has also mentored players like Marc Bernal, before his injury, and Marc Casado, who plays just in front of the defence.
He consistently provides guidance and support, as he did recently with Sergi Dominguez during the young player’s first-team debut against Valladolid.
The 33-year-old is one of the players who has seen his performances improve significantly since Flick’s arrival. There is a shared hope within the team that he can avoid the injuries that plagued him during part of last season.
The upcoming international break should provide him with a chance to recover and prepare for the busy weeks ahead. With key players still out, his consistent performances mean he is likely to continue featuring prominently, especially as the Champions League fixtures begin to add to the schedule.
