How Taylor Swift PAID for Liverpool’s Chiesa transfer

Date:

Anfield played host to three huge Taylor Swift concerts earlier this summer and the American megastar may have paid Liverpool back with the signing of the summer.

For three nights in the middle of June, Anfield once again became home to thousands of loyal fans, but this time the people packing out the Merseyside stadium were not sporting Liverpool shirts and scarves, they were ‘Swifties’.

Anfield has hosted some huge concerts over the last five years, including musical giants such as Elton John, the Rolling Stones, Take That and Bon Jovi but Taylor Swift’s sold-out shows was arguably the biggest non-footballing event to ever take place at Anfield.

The shows attracted fans from all around the world and gave a boost to local businesses in the Liverpool city region, but Taylor Swift may also leave a legacy at Liverpool Football Club.

Taylor Swift’s parting gift

The Liverpool ECHO revealed that Liverpool FC stood to earn up to £10 million from the three concerts at their home ground and this number became massively significant in the closing days of the transfer window.

With only a few days to go of the transfer window Liverpool officially announced the signing of Federico Chiesa on a long-term deal, for a fee of just over £10 million.

It does not take a mathematician to figure out that £10m in equals £10m out, and Swift’s rental of Liverpool’s stadium helped fund the club’s marquee signing this summer.

Liverpool have been known for their smart business over the years and there were examples of this earlier this summer when Liverpool profited from Bournemouth’s sale of Dominik Solanke to Spurs and when the Reds returned huge profits with the sales of Fábio Carvalho and Sepp van den Berg to Brentford.

However, the fact that Liverpool managed to beat Barcelona to the signing of Federico Chiesa using the same amount of money they raised from hosting Taylor Swift is a new stroke of genius from the Anfield board room.

How Chiesa will fit in a Liverpool

Chiesa has been capped 51 times by Italy and played a vital role when his nation won the European Championships in 2021. He can be deployed right across the front-line and will offer further depth and quality to an already stacked attacking department at Liverpool.

The 26-year-old has faced a tough battle with injury in recent seasons, missing nine months of football due to a cruciate ligament tear in 2022 and then picking up a number of muscle injuries in the following years.

Chiesa did however play in 33 of Juventus’ 38 league games last season and this will give Liverpool supporters hope that the worst of Chiesa’s battle with injuries is behind him.

Taylor Swift may have helped Liverpool fill a blank space this summer and supporters will be hoping that their wildest dreams will be realised now that Chiesa is a Red.
