No. 1 Tennessee basketball begins SEC play on Saturday afternoon when it hosts No. 23 Arkansas. The matchup features the return of former Vol Jonas Aidoo, who transferred this past offseason following three seasons on Rocky Top. It also brings John Calipari to Knoxville for the first time as head coach of the Razorbacks.
Tipoff between the top-ranked Vols (13-0) and Razorbacks (11-2) inside of Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on ESPN. Karl Ravech (play-by-play) and Jimmy Dykes (analyst) will have the call.
UT fans can listen to Bob Kesling (play-by-play) and Bert Bertelkamp (analyst) call the action on the Vol Network (Local: WIVK-FM 107.7/WNML-FM 99.1) over 65 stations across the state of Tennessee and the southeast. The top-ranked Volunteers enter conference play 13-0 for the second time in program history. A win on Saturday would extend their fifth 13-game winning streak in program history to 14 for the fourth time.
Calipari is in his first season at Arkansas (11-2) following 15 seasons at Kentucky. UT has faced Calipari 38 times, 16 more than any other active head coach. It was 3-3 against Calipari while he was at Memphis, and was 13-19 against his Kentucky teams.
“It’s always new when you go somewhere else because it takes you a while to realize — what, he spent many, many years in Lexington — just like 17 years at Texas for me,” Rick Barnes said about Calipari on Friday. “You get so into the job, where your life in terms of the way you do things doesn’t change you just in a different environment. And obviously you went from one great fanbase to another great fanbase. And watching his team, he’s always been a great basketball coach everywhere he has been. It doesn’t matter where he goes. He turns things around quickly, wins games and the teams are all always so fundamentally sound. And you have to beat them, they’re not going to beat themselves. But I’m sure he is still making some adjustments, he and his family personally. But basketball wise, you look at what he’s done, pretty much the same.”
