If Xabi Alonso is Manchester City’s man do they need to push Pep Guardiola for a decision on his future?

With the international break in full swing, the future of Pep Guardiola has become a major topic of interest. Guardiola’s contract expires at the end of this season. As it stands, Pep Guardiola’s future remains undecided. That decision is yet to arrive. But in the background, a report from Eurosport Spain suggests that Xabi Alonso is set to depart Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season.

That situation creates an interesting dynamic going forward. If Xabi Alonso is Manchester City’s preferred choice to succeed Guardiola, do they have to move quickly to secure the Leverkusen manager’s signature? Eurosport Spain reports that Real Madrid is interested in securing Alonso as their replacement for Carlo Ancelotti. The spanner in the works at the moment is Pep Guardiola’s future. Without any clarity on the situation, Manchester City does appear in a state of limbo.

So hypothetically how do Manchester City solve the situation? It appears that Xabi Alonso is in Real Madrid’s sights. If City do view Alonso as the man to succeed Guardiola they need clarity on the entire affair. If Guardiola wants to extend his stay at Manchester City, then the situation solves itself. The quicker the better. That will remove the air of uncertainty currently surrounding the club. But if Guardiola wants to call time on his illustrious career at Manchester City then the club needs to know as soon as possible.

But everything at the moment hinges on Guardiola’s decision. In my opinion, the longer it drags on the more likely Guardiola is to stay at the club. But that’s just my opinion on matters. It is the hope of the majority of Manchester City fans that Guardiola signs a contract extension. But is there a point where the club steps in and says to their manager that they need a decision from their manager? It likely hasn’t reached that point just yet. But if we get January or February with Guardiola’s future, undecided, City may have to step in.

I don’t expect the situation to get to that point but it isn’t an unrealistic scenario to contemplate. It may prove to be a scenario that could come into play if Xabi Alonso is the man Manchester City want to succeed Pep Guardiola. With Real Madrid reportedly interested in hiring Alonso as their next manager City can’t afford to be caught out.

But everything depends on Pep Guardiola’s decision. If he decides to stay on as City manager life goes on. But Manchester City can’t afford to wait around forever for that decision. We haven’t reached the point where City may need to put their foot down. But the possibility does exist that they may have to. When that point is remains unknown but the club can’t afford to stand still or be caught out.
