The IHSAA has requested film from South Bend Washington’s first two girls basketball games of the season, coach Steven Reynolds said during an appearance on IndyStar’s ‘The Scorers Table’ podcast Monday afternoon.

The Class 4A Panthers beat 4A Goshen, 93-14, in last Thursday’s opener, then made headlines Saturday with a 100-0 win over 2A Gary Lighthouse.

Reynolds confirmed they’ve sent full footage of both games, but said he’s unclear on the purpose of their request.

“I’ve never had it happen to me before. I don’t know,” he said, when asked about why the IHSAA requested the footage. “Personally, I’ve been kicked in my 11 years. 60, 70, 80 points — I’ve never seen anything like this.”

The IHSAA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Washington’s starters played the first four minutes of each quarter, then were replaced by the reserves. Reynolds said they did not press the entire game and instead sat in the 1-3-1 zone.

They pulled back even further at halftime (66-0 at that point), he continued, with players instructed to not steal or block the ball, and to pull it back out on potential fast-break opportunities. “Our kids were literally helping them. ‘Hey, you gotta v-cut.’ ‘Hey you gotta get open.'”

Reynolds said the Panthers scored two points in the last four minutes and he suggested the game be called early in the last minute with the score 98-0.

“I can lay my head on my pillow knowing we did everything we could to preserve the integrity of competition in an IHSAA sport and be sportsmen in those situations,” Reynolds later added.

Saturday’s game was the seventh shutout by an IHSAA girls basketball team this century and was the 100-0 final, according to Austin Hough of the South Bend Tribune. John Harrell tweeted Saturday there have been seven other 100-point winning margins this century in girls basketball, most recently Tindley’s 107-6 win over Victory Prep on Jan. 30, 2018.
