In the last summer transfer window, the operation that kept FC Barcelona in the spotlight was the one for the Athletic Club winger, Nico Williams. He was reportedly the top transfer target of the Blaugranes, and some of the highest officials of the Catalan club publicly declared their interest in the Spanish winger.
However, for various reasons, mainly economic, Barcelona were unable to land the EURO 2024 winner with Spain. The player himself ruled out a move to the Catalan club in the latter phases of the transfer window as he took to social media to promise another year of his electrifying performances to the Athletic Club fans.
There were reports that his brother, Inaki Williams, had also a part in convincing the winger to stay with the Basque club for another season. Now, as SPORT has reported, Inaki made some comments prior to his team’s match against AS Roma in the UEFA Europa League in which he commended the decision made by his brother.
Talking about Nico’s decision to stay at Athletic Club, Inaki said: “It has been a very long, very hard summer. A summer of having to make decisions. After several months, for me, the right decision has been made.”
Inaki went on to reveal a dream that he is working to fulfill: “Now we have a dream to fulfill, like the whole team. There are few of us who have had the chance to play in European competition with Athletic, and now we are going to fulfill the dream of many.”
Nico Williams will be a very important component of Ernesto Valverde’s team as they look to fight for the Europa League title this season. However, there are no guarantees of where Nico will be playing after this season, as he has promised Athletic Club fans only one more year.
