‘India have been playing outstanding cricket’ says Steve Smith ahead of Border Gavaskar Trophy | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Steve Smith, an Australian batter, expressed his excitement for the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy series against India, acknowledging the Indian team’s outstanding performance over the past two years. The series is set to commence on November 22 with the first Test in Perth.
India has gained the upper hand in the series in recent years, winning the last four series against Australia, including two victories in Australia during the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons.India has won the BGT 10 times, while Australia has won it five times, with their last series win coming in the 2014-15 season and their last victory in India dating back to 2004-05.
In an interview with Star Sports, Smith said, “Yeah, very excited (for the series). You know, it is going to be a great series. You know, India have been playing outstanding cricket. We have been playing really good cricket the last couple of years. We have not beaten India in the last two times they have come out here. Obviously got a terrific side, very well-balanced team, all bases covered.” as per ANI.
Smith, who is the ninth-highest run-getter in the series with 1,887 runs in 18 matches and 35 innings at an average of 65.06, will be looking to prove himself as a Test opener in this series.
Since David Warner’s retirement from Test cricket, Smith has been promoted to the opening slot but has had mixed performances, scoring 171 runs at an average of 28.50 in four Test appearances.
The series will feature a day-night Test at the Adelaide Oval from December 6 to 10, followed by the third Test at The Gabba in Brisbane from December 14 to 18. The iconic Boxing Day Test will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26 to 30, and the series will conclude with the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7.
