International cricket will return to Gwalior after 14 years but not to the same venue as before during India’s opening T20I against Bangladesh on Sunday (6 October).
India will play the first-ever match at Gwalior’s new venue, the Shrimant Madhav Rao Scindia Cricket Stadium, when they host Bangladesh in the first of three T20I matches.
Captian Roop Singh Stadium was the venue used earlier in Gwalior.It hosted World Cup and other international matches. Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) also hosts matches at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
When was the last time Gwalior hosted an international match?

It will be the first match in the city since the historic India-South Africa ODI on 24 February in 2010, where Sachin Tendulkar became the first male cricketer to score a double century in ODIs.
“First man on the planet to reach 200. And it’s the superman from India, Sachin Tendulkar. Take a bow, Master,” exclaimed Ravi Shastri when the milestone moment happened.
The Captain Roop Singh Stadium hosted the 2022 Irani Trophy match between Madhya Pradesh and Rest of India but international cricket has been absent since Tendulkar’s magical knock.

Facts and trivia about Captain Roop Singh Stadium:
– Originally a hockey stadium, the venue was named after Roop Singh, a two-time hockey Olympic gold medallist at 1932 and 1936 Games. Roop Singh was younger brother of hockey legend, Dhyan Chand.
– The Roop Singh Stadium hosted the first and only day-night Ranji trophy final in 1996 between Mumbai and Delhi. Mumbai won that five-day affair courtesy their first-innings lead
– India played matches on successive days in Gwalior in 1993. There were two back-to-back matches in March 1993 where India beat England
– Gwalior hosted South Africa’s second-ever ODI match in 1991 during their first tour since return to international cricket after being suspended for nearly two decades due to their apartheid policy
– During the 2022 Irani Cup match between MP and RoI at the venue, Rest of India won by a massive 238 runs with Yashaswi Jaiswal scoring a double century and another ton in the two innings.
