Minister of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Maman Abdurrahman has said that Indonesia has a great opportunity to become the world’s modest fashion hub.
“Indonesia has a great opportunity to become the world’s center of sharia economy, including halal (products) as well as modest fashion,” he highlighted at the opening of the Indonesia International Modest Fashion Festival (IN2MF) in Jakarta on Wednesday.
In 2023, Indonesia was ranked third out of 81 countries in the Global Islamic Economic Indicator Ranking, reflecting the strength of its sharia ecosystem at the global level.
Indonesia also placed third in modest fashion, second in halal food, and fifth in halal pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.
Indonesia’s modest fashion exports to member countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) reached USD540 million in 2022, making it one of the top 10 exporters to OIC countries.
The ministry views the data as a great opportunity to improve the national economy while implementing sharia values in the fashion industry.
Therefore, the ministry and Bank Indonesia are collaborating to strengthen Indonesia’s modest fashion sector.
The collaboration has included the establishment of a leather production house in Garut, West Java, as the center of the main raw materials for fashion products.
In addition, the ministry has initiated the Young Designer Modest Fashion competition, a first in Indonesia and the world, with the support of Bank Indonesia, the Ministry of Trade, and the Indonesia Fashion Chamber (IFC).
To ensure sustainability, the National Committee for Sharia Economics and Finance and relevant stakeholders are preparing a national strategy to strengthen Indonesia’s position as the world’s center for modest fashion. The strategy is targeted to be completed this year.
