It would appear that Manchester City are preparing to rebuild their midfield in the near future. Recent reports have linked the world champions with a host of young midfielders. One player to be linked with a move to Manchester City is RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons. Christian Falk has reported via his exclusive Daily Briefing column that he believes that the Dutch international is the perfect player for Pep Guardiola’s system. But is that the case? Here’s a look at what Xavi Simons could add to City’s squad and if he is the ideal player for the world champions.
Xavi Simons is currently on loan at RB Leipzig. He spent last season on loan with the Bundesliga outfit. Simons has returned to RB Leipzig for this season as he looks to further develop his career away from PSG. He had an outstanding 23/24 season with Leipzig and will be looking to continue that form this season. Xavi Simons has shown in the Bundesliga that he is one of the most dynamic young players in the game. But is he perfect player to one day come into Pep Guardiola’s squad? On further analysis, it isn’t a far-fetched idea.
First of all, Xavi Simons is a versatile player. He can play on either wing, as a false 9, or as a number 8 or a 10. The versatility in Xavi Simons’ game does appear to be ideally suited to life under Pep Guardiola. But versatility is only one of the weapons in the game of the Dutch international.
What stands out in the game of Xavi Simons is his ability with the ball at his feet. Whether that is with his dribbling ability or eye for a pass he is a constant threat to RB Leipzig’s opponents. That ability has also been on show during his appearances for the Netherlands. Simons is also a threat in the final third, and his goal-scoring record for a midfielder/winger is superb. The Dutch international is also a hard-working player who does his share of defensive duties for both club and country. So, on closer inspection, his game does appear well-suited to life at Manchester City.
It does appear that Manchester City will be looking to rebuild their midfield in time. Christian Falk’s Daily Briefing column also adds that they are also interested in Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz. The quality of those two players is well known. But Xavi Simons is the third young dynamic playmaker currently playing in the Bundesliga. Christian Falk believes that Xavi Simons may be the perfect player for Pep Guardiola’s system. On closer inspection that call doesn’t appear to be wide of the mark at all.
