Is an on loan City defender the future of Manchester City’s defence?

A quick look at Manchester City’s defence shows that the champions are well-stocked for central defenders. Currently, the world champions have Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji and Josko Gvardiol, all capable of playing centre-back. It isn’t an area of Pep Guardiola’s squad that needs an overhaul anytime soon. But there is an on-loan City defender currently showing just how good he is in the Championship with Norwich City. Based on his current form for the Canaries could Callum Doyle one day be the future of City’s defence?

As a player Callum Doyle has all the attributes required to one day play for Manchester City. He is calm in possession. The young defender has the necessary technical ability to play out from the back. Doyle has served his apprenticeship in City’s academy to hone this skill. But he is also a tough and uncompromising defender. Loan spells at Sunderland, Coventry City and Leicester City in previous seasons have seen Doyle learn what it takes to play at the top level. Based on his start to the 24/25 season with Norwich City his ability and lessons learned have set him up to take his game to another level.

Callum Doyle is earning rave reviews for his performances with Norwich City. He has so far been one of the Canary’s best players at the beginning of this season. Everything good in his game has been on full display. Doyle played his best game of the season today during Norwich City’s 4-1 win over Watford. He scored an outstanding goal and put in a fantastic all-around performance. But what caught the eye from a City point of view was that the performance of Doyle today was that he showed the attributes that could one day translate to playing for the world champions.

At 20 years of age, there is no rush for Callum Doyle to make an impact at Manchester City. Time is on his side in that regard. But the more you see him play for Norwich the more you get the belief that he could be the future of Manchester City’s defence. He showed during City’s pre-season tour of the United States that he is by far and away the most promising young defender on City’s books. The way he is performing for Norwich to begin this season Doyle is firmly putting his name up as the future of Manchester City’s defence.
