Is Chaney Johnson the best thing that happened to Auburn Basketball this season?

Date:

The No. 5 Auburn men’s basketball team defeated Kent State 79-56 to move to 3-0 on the season. Despite all the storylines surrounding the Tigers as one of the top programs in the country, the biggest one has come from Division II transfer Chaney Johnson.

Starting his career at University of Alabama-Huntsville, Johnson came into the Tigers system averaging just 4.7 points and 3.4 rebounds last season.

Through the Tigers first three games this year, Johnson is averaging 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. He’s shooting 68.0% from the floor as he’s only missed eight shots all season.

His 18 points on Wednesday night saw him shoot 72.7% from beyond the arc, including two 3-point baskets. Postgame, Johnson spoke on his offseason preparation knowing his role would increase with the departure of Jaylin Williams to the NBA.

“Last summer I came in with a bigger chip on my shoulder because I knew I was going to have to take the spot that J-Will filled so well,” Johnson said. “So just trusting in my work, making sure I’m working on the right shots I’m going to get in the offense. And also, just playing with more confidence.”

Johni Broome also finished with 18 points in the victory over Kent State. He’s almost averaging a double-double with 16.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

The tandem on Broome and Johnson down low has looked like a lethal combination for opposing teams so far. Broome broke down how their offseason training together helped shaped the chemistry the two have on the court now.

“Man. Every time I come in here, I preach that I’m super excited how he’s been playing lately. I believe he could’ve played like this last year, and I always told him play your game, be confident,” Broome said. “We played one on one every day in the summer, off-season, so I know how good he is. As you can see, when he plays with confidence, he’s unstoppable.”

So, is Chaney Johnson the best thing that has happen to Auburn basketball this year?

Not quite. But things are trending in the right direction.

In the words of Bruce Pearl, he’s a freak show so it’s evident the excitement for a huge season is looming for Johnson.

“Chaney’s our hardest worker. He is our hardest worker. He’s in the gym all the time, “Pearl said. And so [Ira Bowman] is in the gym with him every day, and just getting better. He doesn’t know any better. And I think, the thing, his confidence is up. His teammates believe in him. He can sit down and guard, and you know what? You better bring it strong to the rim, because he’s a freak show.”

With Johnson’s hot start, Auburn basketball can be a dangerous team to matchup against. They will host North Alabama next Monday in Neville arena before traveling to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational.
