Is it safe to travel to China? A question the world is asking amid the HMPV outbreak news and viral videos – Times of India

Date:

Five years later, China is facing COVID like situation once again and this time its HMPV. If social media videos are to be believed, the virus is posing major health challenges, with a sharp increase in respiratory illnesses, particularly human metapneumovirus (HMPV). The number of infected people is rising frequently. It clearly looks like a concerning situation and everyone is asking the same questions: If it’s safe to travel to China right now?
The video doing rounds on social media shows hospitals and crematories in China (reportedly) flooded with patients, with reports of overcrowded medical facilities. Not only this, along with HMPV, there are claims of other viruses, including influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and even Covid-19, circulating simultaneously.
Online video posts are concerning. Some even suggest that the current viral outbreak is more complex than just one strain of illness. The spread of multiple respiratory infections, including HMPV, has raised alarms, as these viruses share similar symptoms, complicating diagnosis and treatment.
About Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that affects young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Its symptoms are similar to those of the common cold or flu, including fever, cough, and nasal congestion.
Dangers:
In severe cases, HMPV can lead to more serious conditions, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in young children under five and the elderly. As of now, there is no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment for the virus.
Prevention Tips:
Wash hands with soap and water.
Disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched.
Avoid close contact with individuals who are infected.

China virus

Given the current situation, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), under the Union Health Ministry, is now monitoring respiratory illnesses and seasonal influenza cases across the country. The NCDC is also in communication with international health organisations, as reported by official sources. “We will continue to closely monitor the situation, verify the information, and provide updates as necessary”.
As per data from December 16-22, there has been an increase in acute respiratory infections in China, including seasonal influenza, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and HMPV. Health authorities anticipate a seasonal rise in respiratory infections in the northern hemisphere, especially during the winter months, according to the latest update from the World Health Organization’s Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO).
Is it safe to travel to China?
As of now, saying anything would be early. At present there’s no update on the same from the World Health Organisation (WHO) or the Indian government.
