Islanders General Manager Lou Lamoriello On Ilya Sorokin Injury: ‘Nothing We Are Concerned About’

Date:

EAST MEADOW, NY — After tons of speculation following a report, New York Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello shared the latest on his star netminder Ilya Sorokin.

“He had a little injury during summer training. He is skating, but there’s nothing we are concerned about,” Lamoriello said. “Will he miss the first day (of training camp), the first couple of days? Maybe, but I’m going to leave that up to the training staff.”

As for the report and speculation that Sorokin was dealing with something off-ice related, Lamoriello was shocked to hear that rumor.

“This is someone who is extremely comfortable in his own skin, mentally tough and like Varly, players love to play in front of them. He’s a confident individual,” Lamoriello said.

The Islanders signed 35-year-old veteran Keith Kinkaid to a professional tryout (PTO) and have Marcus Hogberg in Bridgeport as depth options to start camp, outside of the younger in Henrik Tikkanen and Tristan Lennox.

Sorokin, who went 25-19-12 with a 3.01 GAA and a .908 SV% in 56 games, is entering the first year of an eight-year deal, which carries an average annual value of $8.25 million.
