Former players Sunil Gavaskar and Mark Nicholas blasted Yashasvi Jaiswal for his run-out in the team’s first innings of the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The southpaw was batting on 82 when he called Virat Kohli for a single but the veteran turned his back towards the batter. Jaiswal reached the non-striker’s end in no time and the hosts managed to remove the bails, giving India a big blow.
Yashasvi was furious and walked back in anger. Sanjay Manjrekar hit out at Kohli for not responding to the call despite seeing his partner charging towards the other end. However, Sunil Gavaskar and Mark Nicholas felt that Jaiswal was responsible for his downfall.
“There was no need to take that single. It is not T20 cricket or ODIs. You have enough time in Test cricket and risky singles should be avoided. I don’t understand why Jaiswal went for a single, which was never on. He made a shocking mistake,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
Nicholas highlighted Team India’s runs flow to lambast the young batter.
“Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal were batting freely, with runs flowing from their bats. Jaiswal should have stayed back after playing that shot but he couldn’t control himself and paid a heavy price,” Mark Nicholas said.
Virat Kohli couldn’t carry on for a line time and departed after scoring 36 runs.
