Jack Draper channelled his inner Andre Agassi by sporting a pair of trainers in honour of the American great after reaching the semi-finals of the US Open.

The 22-year-old has wasted no time in launching an American charm offensive as he swapped his usual footwear for a pair of classic sneakers made famous by the eight-time grand slam champion during his on-court interview after setting up a last four meeting with Jannik Sinner.

After wrapping up a 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Alex de Minaur to reach a grand slam semi-final for the first time, Draper changed into the retro shoes – the “hot lava” coloured Nike Air Tech Challenge II – which were popularised by Agassi during the 1990s.

While the American became synonymous for wearing the trainers during his playing career, it seems unlikely that Draper will compete in the kicks any time soon. His impromptu footwear change was merely his way of winning over American tennis fans ahead of his semi-final showdown with Sinner.

The striking trainer, which blends dark blue and hot pink colours, became known as the definitive ‘tennis shoe’ during Agassi’s career.

“I don’t know how the hell he moved with these shoes. Honestly, I can’t imagine sliding in these,” said Draper when asked about the footwear.

Asked if he would play in them, he replied: “Absolutely no chance.”

The British 25th seed later published photos of him and Agassi on his Instagram account in which he described Agassi as a player with “iconic style.”

Given the required strapping to his right thigh early in the second set during his victory over De Minaur, it would be unwise for Draper to switch his footwear choices ahead of what will be the biggest match of his young career against top seed Sinner.

Draper’s fashion choices are not the first to raise eyebrows at this year’s US Open after Frances Tiafoe turned heads with his custom-made Air Jordan low tops.

Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka sported a pair of Nikes with Harajuku-inspired bows to match her tutu ‘super suit’, which was complete with tulle, ruffles and a giant bow.
