The Jets will be without left tackle Tyron Smith and linebacker C.J. Mosley for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich said Friday.
Smith (neck) did not practice Friday for the third straight day and could “potentially” land on injured reserve, but Ulbrich said they “don’t know that yet, still gathering information.”
This means first-round draft pick Olu Fashanu will start for the third time this season (previously in Week 4 and 5, both loses). He played 33 and 37 snaps on offense the past two weeks. Fashanu was praised for his performance against the Houston Texans when he stepped in at right guard, a position he had not played previously.
Mosley (neck) will miss his fourth-straight game. The head coach said they are going to wait until after the Week 12 bye to see where the veteran linebacker is before deciding whether he will be placed on IR.
Wide receiver Davante Adams (illness) returned to practice on Friday and is on track to play.
“He had a little bit of an illness the first couple days here and came back,” Ulbrich said. “He was confident throughout this entire process that he was gonna be ready to play in this game.”
Safety Chuck Clark (ankle) has “had a good week” and is “trending towards being elevated” from injured reserve, the head coach said. The veteran, who missed the last four games, was a full participant in practice this week.
New week, new kicker
For the fourth-straight week, the Jets will have a new person serve as their kicker, with Anders Carlson getting the nod after the Kansas City Chiefs signed Spencer Shrader off New York’s practice squad on Thursday.
“We’re confident that Anders can get it done, he looked very good out there today, it was a windy day, a day that was challenging in a lot of ways and did a good job,” Ulbrich said.
About losing Shrader, who went 2-for-2 on field goal attempts in last week’s loss in Arizona, the interim head coach said the situation was, “Not ideal by any means, but we got great confidence in Anders.”
As for not signing Shrader to the active roster earlier in the week, he said, “There’s a lot of stuff that goes into the roster management that I can’t get into.”
Carlson made all five of the field goals he attempted over two games with the San Francisco 49ers earlier this season while going 3-for-4 on extra points. He was 27-for-33 (with all of his misses coming from 40 yards or longer) and 34-for-39 on extra points over 17 games during his rookie season in 2023 with the Green Bay Packers.
