The Giants wasted no time deciding on the fates of GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll following a brutal 2024 season where New York finished 3-14.
Both Schoen and Daboll will be returning for the 2025 campaign, team president John Mara announced early Monday morning.
“Now that our season is over, we felt it necessary to make this statement,” Mara wrote.
“Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will continue in their respective roles with the organization. As disappointing as the results of the season have been, Steve (Tisch) and I remain confident in the process that Joe and Brian have implemented and their vision for our team.
“We look forward to the future and achieving the results we all desire.”
Hired by the Giants in January of 2022 after spending five years as the Bills’ assistant GM, Schoen’s first major move was hiring Daboll as head coach. And the pair helped the Giants find immediate success, turning the previous season’s 4-13 record into a 9-7-1 mark as the Giants made the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
But things went downhill from there, and a 6-11 season in 2023 was followed by this season’s 3-14 mark. Overall, the Giants have a regular season record of 18-31-1 with Schoen and Daboll at the helm.
The biggest challenge for Schoen and Daboll this offseason will be finding a franchise quarterback — a task that will be more difficult since New York now has the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after being in position for the No. 1 selection before a Week 17 win over the Colts.
Coincidentally, it’s the lack of a franchise signal-caller that dotted the first few years of the Schoen-Daboll regime and led to the decision Schoen is perhaps most known for.
After inheriting Daniel Jones from the Dave Gettleman regime, Jones had a solid 2022 season that he put an exclamation point on with a terrific performance in New York’s Wild Card round playoff win over the Vikings in Minnesota.
It was the above that led the Giants to sign Jones to a four-year extension — a move that had a domino effect that eventually led to Saquon Barkley leaving via free agency after last season.
With the Giants’ salary cap situation so tight, New York deemed that it could not afford to keep both Jones and Barkley and build the rest of the team appropriately. Now, Barkley is on the Eagles (where he had a 2,000-yard rushing season) and Jones is on the Vikings after being released midseason.
While it’s fair to give Schoen a bit of a pass for the Jones situation that existed before he was hired — and the fallout — it’s also fair to point out that his drafting has been very hit or miss.
Malik Nabers looks to be a franchise-altering wide receiver, but the jury is out on cornerback Deonte Banks. Meanwhile, Evan Neal (drafted No. 7 in 2022) looks like a bust.
