Just a few days away for Maine Women’s Basketball

Date:

ORONO, Maine (WABI) – The reigning America East Champions, the U-Maine woman’s basketball team held an open media practice today.

The team’s season begins next week and although they are returning most of their starters from last year’s team, this is not the same squad.

After Adrianna Smith went down with a season-ending injury and the graduation of Anne Simon, the Black Bears have 40 points and 20 rebounds to replace.

Despite being last year’s winners and voted as number one in the conference’s pre-season poll, the team feels they still have a lot to prove.

“We were picked number one when Adi was still in the lineup, Adi is not in the lineup anymore. Like I said we lost 40 points and 20 rebounds, I don’t think our team is thinking it’s going to be given to us by any means. We have a lot of work to do and you know it starts every day in practice and starts on Monday,” said Head Coach Amy Vachon.

“I mean, we’re obviously super excited about winning last season, but that’s last season. I mean, this is a new season and we start from a fresh every year,” answered Graduate Student Forward Caroline Bornemann.

The Black Bears open their season up at home against La Salle Monday morning. The first time since 2019 they begin their season on home court.
