Juventus and PSG-Linked Star’s Move to Chelsea Not Forced, Man Utd Chief Clarifies

Date:

Jadon Sancho was linked to Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain toward the end of the summer transfer window. However, the former Manchester United forward went to Chelsea, and one club chief stated the club wasn’t pushing the player out.

On transfer deadline day, Sancho was loaned out to Chelsea. As part of the deal, Chelsea is obligated to buy him at the end of the season for a fee ranging between £20-£25 million, depending on their performance this season.

Even though the player is gone, new sporting director Dan Ashworth stated that the club wasn’t actively trying to force him out due to his spat last season with manager Erik ten Hag.

“Nothing to do with that,” Ashworth said (h/t The Mirror). It was a decision that we made – if it’s right for Jadon and it’s right for us to move on. He wanted to explore the opportunity at Chelsea, like Scott McTominay wanted to explore the opportunity at Napoli, like Aaron Wan-Bissaka wanted to explore the opportunity at West Ham. We’re not in a position where we’re kicking players out of the club.

“With any player, whether it’s Jadon, whether it’s Scott or whether it’s Aaron, if there’s a preference that they would like to move and go to a new club and it’s right for them and it’s right for us, then you have to explore it.

“We felt we had enough depth in that particular position to be able to cover it. We’ve got four really good wide players, Jadon was the fifth, and it just enabled us to make that decision that if it was good for him and good for us, it was something we were willing to consider.”

Sancho spent the latter part of the 2023-24 season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, where he played a role in the club’s run to the UEFA Champions League final. Last season, Sancho played in 24 matches for Manchester United and Dortmund, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
