Kansas school superintendent arrested; staff thanked for keeping students safe

Date:

In the wake of an incident Friday that landed Lyndon USD 421 Superintendent Brad Marcotte in jail, the district is thanking its staff members for ensuring no students were harmed.

The district’s Board of Education placed Marcotte on administrative leave after he was arrested last Friday afternoon on suspicion of child endangerment and obstruction, the district’s parents were told in an email that evening by Bryant Derley, president of that board.

“We want to thank our staff for acting quickly and following our safety procedures to protect students and keep them out of harm’s way,” the email said. “If you have any concerns about how the situation affects your child, please contact your child’s principal or me.”

Lyndon High School Principal Tanner Smith provided The Capital-Journal a copy of the email on Monday.

Lyndon, where a school superintendent was arrested Friday, is located about 30 miles due south of Topeka.

Brad Marcotte was released Friday after posting bond

Marcotte, 53, of Scranton, was arrested by the Lyndon Police Department and booked at 4:49 p.m. Friday into the Osage County Jail in connection with one misdemeanor count each of child endangerment and obstruction, said Bret Lewis, communications director for the Osage County Sheriff’s Office.

Marcotte was then released at 6:45 p.m. Friday after a $2,500 bond was posted, Lewis said.

No further details about Friday’s incident were being made public, Lyndon Police Chief David Forkenbrock told The Capital-Journal Monday.

Lyndon, which has a population of about 1,000, is located about 30 miles due south of Topeka.

Marcotte has been superintendent since 2019 for USD 421. He previously had been principal since 2005 of Lyndon High School.

Court records indicated no formal charges had been filed.

The Capital-Journal as of Monday had been unable to reach Marcotte, who hadn’t responded to an email sent to what was thought to be his personal email address.
