What started as a joke might turn into Keegan Bradley’s new look after a few low rounds at The Sentry.
Bradley opened with a 69, but went low Friday around Kapalua’s Plantation Course with a 9-under 64 that included eight birdies and an eagle on the closing par-5 18th.
The aforementioned new look? A thick, beautiful mustache.
“Well, I did it as a joke to my wife and family, and they all thought it was funny and liked it,” Bradley said after signing his card. “Then now that I’ve played a couple good rounds I’m getting nervous, I’m going to have to keep this thing for awhile.”
The U.S. Ryder Cup captain isn’t the only one who changed his look this week. Sepp Straka, who admitted he was getting a little thin upstairs, decided to take the guard off a set of clippers and expose his dome to Hawaii’s sunshine.
“Yeah, yeah, no guard,” Straka replied when asked about his fresh cut. “I went no guard. Nature was kind of getting in the way there, so I figured I might as well just help it out a little bit. I like it, hopefully more rounds like this with it.”
Although he was one shot worse than Bradley on Friday with an 8-under 65, Straka did have the highlight of the day with seven straight birdies to open his homeward nine.
Heading into the weekend, Bradley is T-7 at 13 under, three shots back of Hideki Matsuyama who is alone at the top of the leaderboard at 16 under. Straka is 12 under total, alone in 11th and four shots back of the Japanese star.
