Kentucky Women’s Basketball takes down Queens, 87-45

Date:

Following a loss to North Carolina on the road in Chapel Hill, Kentucky Women’s Basketball got back on track on Monday after a 87-45 win against Queens. After getting off to a 29-9 lead in the first quarter, there was no going back for the ‘Cats.

In the first, Kentucky’s shooting was on point. Shots were falling and Queens was crumbling, unable to keep up with the Wildcats’ rhythm. Georgia Amoore led her team through the first 10 minutes with nine points on 3-5 from the field. With two three-pointers and an 3-point play, Amoore was set to have a big game for the ‘Cats. Amelia Hassett and Teonni Key also started hot, finishing the first quarter with five and four points, respectively.

To end the half, the ‘Cats went on a 12-0 run to begin the second quarter to lead by 30. Kentucky shot 6-17 (35.3%) from three in the half, two from Amoore, three from Hassett, and one from Dazia Lawrence. Additionally, the ‘Cats held Queens to only 7-31 (22.6%) from the field in the first half, solidifying a 34-point lead going into the third. Clara Strack finished the half with 12 points on 5-9 (55.6%) from the field and three rebounds, along with two assists.

While the third quarter was much slower offensively for Kentucky, the ‘Cats continued to creep away from the Royals. Despite giving up 11 points in the third, Kentucky went into the fourth with a 47-point lead over Queens. Key led her team that quarter, marking eight points and four rebounds with perfect shooting. Amoore added six, and Clara Silva added four.

The fourth quarter was much of the same. Kentucky scores, gets a stop on defense, scores again, and so on. However, Queens got a taste of Saniah Tyler, Gabby Brooks, and Tanah Becker, three players who don’t typically see solid playing time. As a trio, they tallied three points, two rebounds, and two assists. Cassidy Rowe ran the offense for the majority of the fourth, giving Lawrence and Amoore a break from the point. She added two rebounds and two assists in 17 minutes of play.

With a solid win in the books, Kentucky Women’s Basketball returns on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 5:00 p.m. EST to take on Purdue for the second away game of the season. Now that the ‘Cats are 8-1, they have the potential to head into SEC play with only one loss if they can secure a win over the Boilermakers.
