Sep. 30—ABERDEEN — The Mitchell High School boys golf team had a rough go of it on Monday at the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet at Moccasin Creek Golf Course, finishing seventh out of 10 teams.

Six days after nearly setting a school record as a team in Watertown, Monday’s effort was the highest score of the season for the Kernels, shooting 342. Conditions were much tougher on Monday in Aberdeen, with steady winds around 30 mph and gusting to as high as 44 mph.

Pierre won the conference title as a team, shooting 310, with second place Harrisburg finishing 12 shots back at 322. Brandon Valley (325), Watertown (330), Tea Area (338) and Yankton (340) took places 3-6 ahead of Mitchell.

Mitchell was led by Everett Morrison and Sam Titze, who each shot rounds of 83 on the day, good for a tie for 15th place in a field of 58 golfers. Titze, who started his day on No. 10, opened his day with a 2-over-38 on his first nine holes, including five pars in a row, while Morrison shot 43-40 on his card. Asher Dannenbring carded an 86 for a tie for 27th place and Marshall Widstrom was tied for 38th place, shooting 90. Brady Reiners shot a round of 94, while Carter McCormick checked in with a 96 to round out the Kernel squad.

Pierre’s Sawyer Sonnenschein won the individual tournament with a 2-over-par round of 74. He edged Tea Area’s Derek Andersen by a shot (75), while Will Peterson was third with a 4-over-76. Pierre’s Nick Bothun and Harrisburg’s Riley Christensen finished tied for fourth place with a 5-over-77.

Mitchell will now look ahead to the two-day Class AA state golf meet on Monday, Oct. 7 and Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Cattail Crossing Golf Course in Watertown. Play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. both days.
