Sep. 20—MITCHELL — It was a special day for the Mitchell High School boys golf team at the squad’s home Mitchell Invitational on Friday at Lakeview Golf Course.
The Kernels shot a season-best 297 score as a team, senior Brady Reiners aced the par-3 8th hole and Asher Dannenbring shot a 2-under-69 to finish in third place individually, as MHS posted a third-place finish among 19 teams.
The 297 team score is the fourth-best mark in MHS boys golf history, coach Ryker Kreutzfeldt said following the round. As a team, it was Kernels’ best team score since at least 2004 at their home invitational, nearly 20 strokes better than the team’s scoring average for the season entering the meet.
Dannenbring, a sophomore, had six birdies in his round, including a 1-under-34 on the back nine. It was Dannenbring’s first career sub-70 Kernel round. He finished one shot behind leaders Nick Bothun, of Pierre, and Charlie Swift, of Harrisburg, who tied for the lead at 3-under-68 after 18 holes. Bothun then won the individual tournament on the second playoff hole.
The MHS senior Reiners made his first career hole-in-one with a gap wedge at the downhill par-3 from 140 yards out. Reiners was even on the front nine thanks to the ace at No. 8 and finished with a 9-over-80 for the day, finishing tied for 37th place.
The Kernels’ Everett Morrison shot 1-over-par 72 to finish in a tie for sixth place and Carter McCormick fired a 5-over-par 76, good for 17th place. Marshall Widstrom shot an 82 and Sam Titze shot 83 to cap the MHS varsity scores.
Overall, five players were even or under par, led by Bothun and Swift’s rounds of 68. Dannenbring shot 69 and was tied by Brandon Valley’s Carter Peterson, while Pierre’s Sawyer Sonnenschein shot 71 for solo fifth place.
With the course renovations taking place, the course was played as a par-71 with the former par-5 15th hole playing as a par-4.
Pierre won the team title with a team score of 286, or 2-over-par as a team. Brandon Valley was one shot behind at 287, followed by Mitchell at 297. Harrisburg shot 304 and Sioux Falls Lincoln and Yankton checked in at 310 in the top-five.
The Mitchell JV shot 339 as a team in the meet, finishing in 18th place in the team standings. Jordan Meyerink had the team’s best score with an 82 for a tie for 51st place. Dawson Adams had an 83, Canon Moller and Ian Weber each shot 87, while Matthew Muszycki (89) and Tyler Christensen (98) each were on the course for the Kernels, as well.
Parkston was also in action at the tournament, as the lone Class A team in the field. The Trojans were led by Kelby Neugebauer and Landon Weber, who each shot rounds of 82 to tie for 51st place.
Mitchell will compete next on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Cattail Crossing Golf Course in Watertown for an invitational. The course is the site of this year’s Class AA state meet, which will be played Oct. 7-8 in Watertown.
