Kyprios retained the Irish St Leger crown with a strong performance at the Curragh on Sunday.

Under Ryan Moore, Kyprios, the favourite at 2-5, raced ahead of the chasing pack in the final furlong to give Aidan O’Brien another success.

The St Leger title goes alongside the Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup which Kyprios has won this year, marking a successful return from a serious injury sustained last year.

WP Mullins’ trained Vauban edged Giavellotto for second place in a close fought contest.

Earlier, in the National Stakes at the Curragh, Scorthy Champ was the surprise winner, finishing ahead of the previously unbeaten Henri Matisse.

Henri Matisse, who had won each of his three previous races for Aidan O’Brien, was 5-6 favourite to secure his fourth successive win in his Group One debut.

However, the Joseph O’Brien-trained Scorthy Champ, who had a winning debut at Leopardstown in May, finished three-quarters of a length ahead of the favourite.

Ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, Scorthy Champ, who was 12-1 to win, broke ahead and stayed straight and true to claim the victory.

Hugo Palmer’s Seagulls Eleven came in third.
