Sep. 18—Southern Lee tennis had its second meeting of the season with Scotland Tuesday afternoon, as the Lady Scots came to town for a match in which both teams were missing members of the starting lineup. The good news for the hosts was that the Lady Cavaliers filled the gaps and scored a second straight 7-2 win over the Scots.
Southern (4-2 overall) scored the team win by the end of singles play. The Lady Cavs won five of the six individual matches and two of the three doubles while using every available player on the roster. The team was missing a few players of its own, but earned points from players who moved up in seed and some who are not normally part of the starting lineup.
The match opened with top-seeded Genesis Gonzales remaining undefeated this season by downing Scotland’s Rhea Truesdell 8-0 in about 20 minutes. Scotland got a point at No. 2, where Marissa Collins beat Logan Hickman 8-2, but the home team swept the rest of the singles matches. The only one that was close was at No. 5, where head coach Vickie Wilkins moved freshman Julie Slavik into the spot and watched her score an 8-6 win over Terralynn Edwards.
The rest of the singles saw Brooke Burrus (3) beat Shay Ward 8-1; Quillen Petrarca (4) down Kaleigh Leviner 8-2; and Gina DeCerbo (6) shut out Danyah Norton 8-0.
In doubles, Burrus and Petrarca moved up one spot in the lineup and scored an 8-0 win over Truesdell and Smith. At No. 2 doubles, Zofia Pogorzelska and Franka Mueller scored an 8-6 win over Ward and Leviner, while Scotland finished out the match with a point when McKenna Bristow and Trinity Rodriguez defeated Southern’s Alexsondra Gomez and Cameron Collins 8-3.
The Lady Cavaliers will travel to Pinecrest on Thursday evening and then take on Union Pines on the first day of October.
