Las Vegas man faces charges including DUI after crash near Red Rock kills motorcyclist

Date:

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man faces several charges including DUI resulting in death after a hit-and-run caused the death of a motorcyclist on Red Rock Loop late Monday evening.

On Monday, Aug. 26 at around 11:15 p.m., officers with the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol responded to a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a motorcycle on State Route 159, known as Red Rock Loop, and mile marker 3.

Medical personnel arrived on scene and pronounced the motorcycle rider, 55-year-old Carson Heath, dead on the scene.

Through investigation, police determined Heath was driving north when he was rear ended by another vehicle that left the scene after the crash.

Investigators collected car parts on the scene left behind by the suspected hit-and-run vehicle and determined it was a Ram 1500 between 2019 to 2024.

Later in the morning, officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call involving a Ram 1500 truck on Blue Diamond and Cimarron roads. According to the LVMPD, Good Samaritans followed the Ram while it was driving on its rim and later ran off the road and became stuck.

LVMPD officers arrested the driver, later identified as Iurie Trofim, 40, on a DUI charge and took him to the Clark County Detention Center.

NHP officers located the truck at a local tow yard and determined it had damage and evidence consistent with the Red Rock crash.

Nevada Highway Patrol wrote in a release that it wanted to express their gratitude to the Good Samaritans who report drunk drivers on the road.

Trofim faces the following charges:

  • DUI resulting in death

  • Duty to stop at the scene of an accident involving death

  • Reckless driving resulting in death

  • Failure to render aid at a vehicle accident

  • Failure to decrease speed or use due care

  • Failure to drive on the right half of the roadway

Trofim made his first court appearance on Aug. 28, where a judge gave him a $10,000 bail and was told not to drive. Trofrim will also be on alcohol monitoring.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 3.
