Here’s our round-up of all the latest Liverpool transfer news today (Friday 13 September) as Cesar Huerta reveals how a move to Liverpool almost materialised last summer.
Liverpool ready to sign superstar winger
Liverpool are reportedly ready to make a move for £50m-rated Japan winger Takefusa Kubo, who has been likened to Lionel Messi.
The transfer window may have ended a few weeks ago, but for Liverpool’s sporting director and the rest of the club’s recruitment team their work is never-ending.
Already, there will be a shortlist prepared ahead of the January and the summer window with some key decisions facing Richard Hughes and his team.
There are contract decisions to make over Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Not to mention, there are other areas of the squad where Liverpool will look bolster Arne Slot’s squad.
And one player who could be revisited is Real Sociedad‘s wing ace Kubo, who was linked with Anfield earlier this year.
Liverpool linked with Loic Bade

The search for stars to replace Liverpool’s summer 2025 contract expirees appears to be in full swing, with the emergence of a transfer value for a targeted centre-back.
Like the team’s attacking talisman Mohamed Salah, defensive rock and club captain Virgil van Dijk is considered a very hard act to follow.
Hence why sporting director Richard Hughes and his recruitment colleagues are reported to be focusing on alternatives for the Reds’ rearguard.
That’s very much about the heart of the back four, where Joel Matip‘s departure at the end of last term has left Arne Slot with only four senior options for two berths – Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, utility man Joe Gomez and Academy graduate Jarell Quansah.
And now it’s emerged that Sevilla star Loic Bade could well be on the Reds’ radar.
Huerta had ‘suitcase packed’ ahead of Liverpool move
Mexican winger Cesar Huerta has revealed just how close he came to joining Liverpool, before the deal fell through.
Last month, media reports suggested that the Reds were close to signing the 23-year-old, who currently plays for Pumas UNAM in Mexico.
According to Mexican broadcaster TUDN, Huerta was “very close” to sealing a permanent move to Anfield, which would have involved an initial loan to Championship side Sunderland before joining up with Liverpool next summer.
However, the transfer reportedly collapsed after Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris vetoed the move, leaving Huerta to remain at Pumas.

While Virgil van Dijk remains as dominant as ever in defence for Liverpool and the Netherlands, contract negotiations have stalled and the club may need to look to the future.
Despite being widely considered the best centre-back in the Premier League, the 33-year-old is not getting any younger, and rumours are circulating about potential short-term and long-term replacements.
Having joined the club in 2018 from Southampton, with his signing announcement proving to be one of the Reds’ greatest-ever Christmas presents to fans, the Dutch international has been faultless across the past six years.
However, all good things come to an end, and the club was always going to reach a point where they need to move on and attempt to find someone capable of filling the hole left by his absence. To that end, the Bayer Leverkusen star Jonathan Tah is the latest name in the frame.
