LOCAL COLLEGES: UW-EC tennis takes third in WIAC

Date:

MADISON — The UW-Eau Claire women’s tennis team placed third at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday at Nielsen Stadium. The Blugolds accrued 16 points in the overall conference standings, which factored in regular-season dual performances and conference tournament performances.

All of the Blugolds’ competitors placed in the top four of their flights. Samantha Fuchs and Anna Lee were UW-Eau Claire’s top finishers, taking second place, respectively, at No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles. Fuchs also earned a spot on the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team, which included UW-Stout’s Aspen Johnson as well.

Taking third for the Blugolds were Liv Herzog at No. 4 singles, Reese Burton at No. 5 singles and Téa Armstrong at No. 6 singles. All three won their third-place matches in straight sets.

Fuchs and Lee teamed up to take third place at No. 1 doubles, and Armstrong and Aubrey Wittwer took third place at No. 3 doubles. Morgan Dekan, an Altoona product, took fourth at No. 3 singles and she and Herzog also took fourth at No. 2 doubles.

UW-Eau Claire finished four points behind WIAC champion UW-Whitewater, which notched its 18th straight title, in the overall standings. UW-River Falls took sixth and UW-Stout seventh.

The Blugolds will return to the court next year, with their first dual scheduled for Feb. 8. UW-Whitewater, UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stevens Point advance to the team tournament that will determine the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championship. UW-Whitewater will host the four-team event on April 26.
