Man Utd’s Long-Awaited Missing Piece: Why Former PSG Star Fits Bill Perfectly

Date:

Manuel Ugarte officially made the switch from Paris Saint-Germain to Manchester United on Friday. Following the announcement by both clubs, there was plenty of reaction to this deal getting done.

Ugarte didn’t quite fit into Luis Enrique’s midfield plans, so he’s set to leave after just one season. Last year, he made 37 appearances for the reigning Ligue 1 champions and notched up three assists.

The 23-year-old started the season strong, looking like the midfield enforcer the team needed. But as the season went on, his playing time decreased, and he became more of a rotational player rather than a regular starter.

“He’s a young defensive midfielder,” ESPN’s Mark Ogden said on Friday. “Tenacity, box to box in terms of he could hit the ground, and I think it’s what United haven’t had for a long time… So this is a really big sign of United. If it really likes somebody to anchor the midfield, play for the defense, be a partner for Kobbie Mainoo [and] phases Casamero out.”

Multiple reports reveal that PSG will receive a fixed fee of €50 million plus €10 million in add-ons and a 10 percent sell-on clause as part of Ugarte’s transfer to Manchester United.

Furthermore, journalist Duncan Castles reported this week there are no hard feelings toward Ugarte and that PSG anticipate that Ugarte will become one of Manchester United’s top players in the future.
