McDonald’s No Longer Serving a Breakfast Menu Item Staple at Some Locations—Here’s Why

Date:

Just weeks after an E. coli outbreak linked to onions on McDonald’s Quarter Pounders, the popular chain restaurant is dealing with another setback—this time related to a bestselling line of beverages.

According to CBS News, hot and cold lattes could be off the menu for up to three weeks because of a defect in the $3,000 machines used to make the espresso-based drinks.

Melitta, the manufacturer of the machines in question, said in a statement to restaurant owners, per The Wall Street Journal, that they recommended a temporary stop to their use to “proactively ensure safety.”

“We are investigating the two impacted machines. Our intent is to determine the root cause and provide a remediation plan that allows us to move forward,” the statement read.

Melitta reportedly let restaurant owners know that they would be investigating a defect that could potentially cause “a blast of steam to emit, breaking the piece.”

In a statement of its own, McDonald’s said they “have moved quickly to decommission these machines in McDonald’s restaurants and are staying in contact with our supplier to resolve the issue,” CBS reported, noting that they are “still determining the scope of the impact.”

While burgers might be the first thing people think of when they hear the word “McDonald’s,” the chain sells almost 8 million cups of coffee per day, even launching a spinoff restaurant called CosMc’s last year which focused on coffee and other types of specialty drinks.

Both hot and iced coffee will continue to be available at McDonald’s as the problematic machines are investigated. But anyone hoping for a latte with their Egg McMuffin will have to go elsewhere.
