Michigan coach Sherrone Moore officially signs contract

Date:

Sherrone Moore’s Michigan contract has been signed ahead of the third game of the 2024 season.

Jim Harbaugh’s successor had coached the first two weeks of the season without a signed contract to be the team’s head coach. That changed on Wednesday when the school announced Moore’s contract had been finalized.

“Our University of Michigan administration led by President Santa Ono and Athletic Director Warde Manuel has been tremendous throughout this process, and I am excited to have this full contract completed,” Moore said in a school statement. “Their support for our team is greatly appreciated and all three of us are aligned in our goals for this football program. We want the attention to be on the players that work so hard to represent this team and university at the highest level.”

Moore was promoted from offensive coordinator after Harbaugh left for the Los Angeles Chargers following Michigan’s undefeated 2023 season. Moore served as the team’s interim coach during two different Harbaugh suspensions at the beginning and end of the season.

The first suspension came for recruiting violations that the NCAA recently punished Harbaugh for. The second came as part of the Connor Stalions advance-scouting scandal. And it’s possible that Moore could face NCAA sanctions as part of that scandal.

ESPN reported in August that a draft notice of allegations said Moore could face a show-cause penalty from the NCAA for his role in the scandal. NOA drafts can and do change before they are officially sent to schools. Michigan officially received the NOA three weeks after ESPN’s report.

The No. 17 Wolverines are 1-1 heading into their Week 3 game against Arkansas State. After beating Fresno State in Week 1, Michigan lost 31-12 at home to Texas in Week 2.
