Middle Georgia Men’s Basketball head coach Scott Moe has announced the hiring of Tyler Thayer as an assistant coach for the Knights men’s basketball program.

“I think the hiring of Tyler will bring a new energy to the Middle Georgia basketball program. His experience and knowledge of the NCAA will be valuable as we move our program forward” said Moe.

Thayer comes to MGA after three seasons as an assistant coach at Barry University, a NCAA Division II institution in Miami Shores, Florida and a member of the Sunshine State Conference. Thayer assisted in all aspects of the program with an emphasis on recruiting, player development, and monitoring academics. At Barry, he recruited and developed three Sunshine State All-Conference players and one All-Newcomer player as well as nine players that went on to play professionally.

Prior to his time at Barry, Tyler was an assistant coach at Independence Community College where he assisted in all aspects of the program and worked with academics and compliance. At Independence, he recruited and developed five All-Jayhawk players and led eight players to NCAA D-I scholarships.

Before his tenure at Independence, Thayer was an assistant coach at Converse University in Spartanburg, S.C. where he helped recruit and build the startup NCAA Division II men’s basketball program. Thayer also spent one season as a graduate assistant coach at Barry while assisting with the management of several youth basketball camps.

“I would like to thank Coach Scott Moe and Director of Athletics Michael Brown for this opportunity! I am ready to hit the ground running and play a part in helping our players become all they strive to be on and off the floor. This is a special place and I am fortunate to join this program at such an exciting time. Let’s work!”, said Thayer.

Tyler played four seasons as a member of the Barton College men’s basketball team in Wilson, North Carolina. Barton is a NCAA Division II program and a member of the Conference Carolinas. He graduated with a degree in Sports Management from Barton and earned his Master’s degree in Sports Management from Barry.

As a shooting guard, he led Barton in made three-pointers with 55 in 2015-16 and also received the team’s William Gear Spencer Sportsmanship Award. Thayer excelled in the classroom as well, being named to the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll for the Spring 2016 semester.
