Mitchell boys golf takes eighth place at Yankton Invitational

Sep. 13—YANKTON — The Mitchell High School boys golf team finished in eighth place at the Yankton Invitational on Friday afternoon at Hillcrest Country Club.

As a team, the Kernels posted a score of 331, led by Marshall Widstrom’s 15th-place finish after shooting a round of 6-over 78. Following a double bogey on the par-5 first hole, Widstrom picked up 10 pars in a row, shooting 38 on Hillcrest’s front nine and 40 on the back side.

Other Kernel performances include Asher Dannenbring’s round of 80 as he finished in a tie for 23rd. Carter McCormick carded three consecutive birdies on his opening nine, finishing with a share of 46th at 86. Everett Morrison shot an 87 and finished tied for 52nd, Sam Titze (88) came in tied for 60th, and Brady Reiners (90) finished tied for 72nd.

Watertown’s Ty Lenards was the only player in the field to shoot under-par, carding a 1-under 71 with five birdies to take the individual crown by three strokes over Pierre’s Sawyer Sonnenschein and O’Gorman’s Taten Mauney. Tea Area’s Derek Anderson, Watertown’s Jonathan Lake, Harrisburg’s Hayden Scott, and Brandon Valley’s Will Peterson finished tied for fourth at 3-over 75.

The Arrows also took home the team crown with a final score of 301, with Brandon Valley and Harrisburg sharing second place at 308. Pierre was fourth with a final tally of 309, and O’Gorman completed the top-five with a 310.

Mitchell returns to the links at the Brookings Invitational on Monday, Sept. 16, at Brookings Country Club.
