Motorcyclist found more than 12 hours after crash in Interstate 43 median in New Berlin

Date:

NEW BERLIN – A 20-year-man lay for more than 12 hours, throughout the night and following morning, after he crashed his motorcycle in a median on Interstate 43 late Tuesday.

The man was spotted at about 11:55 a.m. Wednesday by passing traffic after he finally crawled within view in a desperate attempt to catch the attention of motorists near Sunny Slope Road in New Berlin. He was eventually transported to a hospital with critical injuries after authorities located him on the busy highway.

The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office, which began an investigation Wednesday afternoon, said in a news release that the man lost control of his cycle at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, ending up deep in the median, apparently out of view from traffic in either direction.

WCSO Lt. Nicholas Wenzel, in response to questions, acknowledged authorities weren’t certain whether the man, who was not named, remained conscious through the whole ordeal until he was found. He was listed in stable condition with unspecified injuries. The investigation is continuing, Wenzel said.

The New Berlin police and fire department assisted in the rescue operation.
