New Red Wings Goaltender Is Surprising Everyone

Date:

A new year offers fresh prospects.

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Cam Talbot embodies this mindset perfectly.

On July 1st, he embarked on an exciting new chapter by signing a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings, valued at $2.5 million per season. Things are shaping up remarkably well for him.

Talbot has achieved a 5-2-1 record in just nine games, showcasing 2.34 goals against average (GAA), an impressive .927 save percentage (SV%), and a shutout.

I don’t think Steve Yzerman was expecting him to be this good. But luckily for them, he has been.

Recently, Talbot played a pivotal role in the Red Wings’ electrifying 3-2 overtime triumph, making 31 saves and setting a new personal milestone. That game marked his 250th career victory. With this achievement, Talbot now stands 65th in all-time career wins for goaltenders.

Among active players, only Connor Hellebuyck, Semyon Varlamov, Frederik Andersen, Andrei Vasilevskiy, Jonathan Quick, Sergei Bobrovsky, and Marc-Andre Fleury have surpassed his career victories. Talbot’s journey is not ending just yet, and it’s clear that he has the potential to make an even greater impact in the league.

Talbot has recently had a few new chapters; he is now on his fifth team in six seasons, having played for the Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators, and Los Angeles Kings before stopping in Detroit.

While it’s unlikely that he will reach the full heights of his time with the Edmonton Oilers, he will likely land somewhere just under that.

And that should suit Red Wings fans just fine.
